Tipton County 560W
Tipton County Road 560W New Road Construction
PHASE I – US 31 & SR 28 – GETRAG Site
High-profile project requiring intersection improvements and the widening of S.R. 28 for the proposed automotive transmission plant. USI completed the design, survey & R/W Engineering for the project while serving as liaison between the site designer and state and local authorities. This project also included environmental documentation and acquisition of Right of Way. The project was fast tracked, going from Engineer’s Report to Tracings within 12 months. USI helped foster a team atmosphere amongst all partners, including INDOT, review agencies, utilities, and local officials that allowed for the successful completion in such a short time frame.
The opening of Tipton County Road 560W is the culmination of over 8 years of effort by Tipton County Officials, in conjunction with the Tipton County EDC, Indiana EDC and the Indiana Department of Transportation to develop a north/south corridor between SR28 and Division Road to serve the newly constructed Chrysler plant. The project development happened in two phases. Phase 1, which started in 2007, built the roadway from SR28 north for approximately 2500 ft to provide the truck entrance to the then GETRAG (now Chrysler) plant, along with access for the newly constructed Water and Wastewater plants for Tipton Municipal Utility, and the IMPA Power Station. Phase 1 utilized funding from Tipton County and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation through INDOT and included the purchase of a 25 acre parcel north of Phase 1 to provide the necessary right-of-way for Phase 2. This project was built in 2008, with an estimated cost of $1,284,000.
PHASE II – County Road 560W/550W
USI Consultants completed the design, survey & R/W Engineering for both phases of this new road construction to accommodate the GETRAG transmission plant. Phase I (approx. 0.5 mile) was built in 2007. The design for Phase II (approx. 0.5 mile) has recently been completed. Phase II was built to accommodate future plans for an Industrial Park to be located adjacent to the existing transmission plant.
Phase 2 continued the roadway north, and created a new railroad grade crossing with the Norfolk Southern Railway at CR100S and connected into existing CR550W. This phase was funded by Tipton County and Federal Highway Funds through INDOT, secured by the Tipton County Board of Commissioners in 2010.
Now at completion, CR560W/CR550W provides a full two lane (2 -12’ lanes with paved shoulders) roadway between SR28 and Division Road. It now provides area drainage improvement, ingress and egress to existing facilities, and opens property to development.
