Ronald Reagan Parkway – Hendricks County
USI Consultants & Hendricks County officials were presented with an Engineering Excellence Honor Award for the Ronald Reagan Parkway Project. USI performed surveying, road & bridge design
USI Consultants, Inc. completed the design of this high profile project located on the eastern edge of the Town of Avon for the Hendricks County Board of Commissioners in 2011, with construction completed in 2013.
This project is a continuation of the federal aid funded Ronald Reagan Parkway, a major north-south arterial connecting Interstate 70 to the south with Interstate 74 to the north through Hendricks County.
This segment of the Ronald Reagan Parkway begins at CR 100 S continuing north for 1.19 miles to US 36/Rockville Road and involves new roadway construction and three new bridges including Bridge No. 208 over the CSXT Big Four Rail Yard. Bridge No. 208 is a major structure that spans seven rail lines, a frontage road to the south a gravel maintenance road to the north and two elevated rail lines used as a gravity feed into the rail yard. These elevated rail lines necessitated the new bridge be raised an additional 20 ft above the surrounding ground to ensure the proper vertical clearance was met. The 568 ft long four span continuous composite structure utilized massive 78″ deep pre-stressed concrete bulb tee beams ranging from 135 ft to 147 ft long. The new roadway and bridges also included a sidewalk on the west side of the structure for pedestrian access across the rail yard. This project began with a major alternative study to determine the most appropriate span configuration looking at numerous bridge and foundation types due to the limitations imposed by the rail locations, and elevations, within the yard.
The selected substructure type (drilled shaft foundations) eliminated the need for large footings and the driving of piles within the yard. Once completed the parkway will one day connect three major interstates, I-70 to I-74, and then I-65 through Hendricks and Boone Counties, and this segment over the CSXT Big Four Rail Yard is a major milestone reached toward that goal.
